‘To liberate the unconscious might be to let go of the ego, or the notion of authorship. I always come back to the word “conduit,” because I feel like an open channel when I’m making art. I often imagine my body as a funnel through which the world is poured.’ – Janine Antoni

Lightshard

Yesterday while shooting in the city, I beheld this gorgeous nebula amongst several astonishing little shards of light prisms in the sky. This is the only one which was visible through my camera. Just a reminder that rainbows can appear on perfectly clear, sunny days. Yes, life is that good!

Today is mine

Saw Tommy Emmanuel perform this evening and (mindblowing virtuosity aside) it was so moving and sacred. He quoted these lyrics by Jerry Reed. FEEL IT:

“Today Is Mine
When the sun came up this morning I took the time to watch it rise.
As its beauty struck the darkness from the skies.
I thought how small and unimportant all my troubles seem to be, and how lucky another day belongs to me.
And as the sleepy world around me woke up to greet the day, and all its silent beauty seemed to say: So what, my friend, if all your dreams you haven’t realized.
Look around, you got a whole new day to try.
Today is mine, today is mine, to do with what I will.
Today is mine.
My own special cup to fill.
To die a little that I might learn to live.
And take from life that I might learn to give.
Today is mine.
With all men I curse the present that seems void of peace of mind, and race my thoughts beyond tomorrow and vision there more peace of mind.
But when I view the day around me I can see the fool I’ve been.
For today is the only garden we can tend.
Today is mine, today is mine, to do with what I will.
Today is mine.
My own special cup to fill.
To die a little that I might learn to live.
And take from life that I might learn to give.
Today is mine.”

Hillman+Chavez: “Entwined” at Trois Gallery in Atlanta, January 29-February 28, 2010

For Immediate Release

Savannah College of Art and Design Atlanta (SCAD) Presents “Entwined” by William T. Hillman and Lia Chavez

ATLANTA, Ga.—The SCAD exhibitions department presents “Entwined,” an exhibition showcasing the recent collaboration between artists William T. Hillman and Lia Chavez. “Entwined” presents large-scale photographs depicting choreographed, overlapping bodies that emerge and dissolve in stark silhouettes. Both corporal and cerebral, the imagery evokes the connections between the physical and the psychological. Also entwined is the unique combination of traditional and digital photographic processes used in this innovative body of work.

In a recent catalogue for the Hillman + Chavez collaboration, renowned writer and curator Gary Sangster wrote, “The work of William T. Hillman and Lia Chavez – a first time partnership in creative photography from two artists, one located in New York and the other in London – can be described as the embodiment of a complex hybrid system of contemporary expressive pictorialism.”

The exhibition will be on display at the Trois Gallery at SCAD Atlanta, 1600 Peachtree St., Jan. 29-Feb. 28. A reception for the artists will be held on Feb. 4, 6 p.m. Opening remarks will be offered by Lia Chavez. The event and exhibition are free and open to the public.

William T. Hillman lives in New York City. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad. Recent shows include the Fashion District Arts Festival, New York City, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana, and The Prague Contemporary Art Festival. A graduate of Princeton University, Hillman holds an M.B.A. from Columbia University and also has studied at The Art Students League of New York and the Lacoste School of the Arts in France.

Lia Chavez lives in London. Recent shows include Detournement Venise collateral exhibition of the 53rd Venice Biennale of Visual Arts; The Prague Contemporary Art Festival; “Personally Political – Contemporary Sensation”, Kunsthaus Tacheles, Berlin; “Nightcomers”, 10th International Istanbul Biennial.
